Today, a customer online asked me if the price of steel structure floor deck plates is calculated by square meter or ton. I want to address this topic here to hopefully assist anyone looking for such information.
In reality, there are three main ways to calculate the price of floor deck plates: by length (meters), by area (square meters), and by weight (tons). These methods are fundamentally the same and can be easily converted into one another. Typically, larger projects tend to use meter-based pricing.
Of course, there are also smaller projects that are often calculated by meter. We’ve encountered numerous online customers with smaller projects who ask for prices based on meter-length because it seems more affordable at first glance. For instance, the closed-profile panel YXB65-185-555, with a thickness of 0.75mm, costs 80 yuan per square meter, which converts to 80 x 0.72 = 57.6 yuan per meter.
At first glance, the price might look quite reasonable, but it's essentially the same as other calculation methods. Occasionally, some projects are quoted by ton, which is less common but offers a different perspective compared to square meters and meters.
Let’s take the earlier example of the closed-profile panel YXB66-720, with a thickness of 0.75mm and a price of 80 yuan per square meter. This panel weighs approximately 10.8 kg per square meter, which converts to 80 x 1000 / 10.8 ≈ 7407 yuan per ton.
We once had a client who specifically requested a quote based on tonnage. When we asked why, they explained that they had previously worked on a project where they faced losses due to square-meter pricing. During inspections of the corrugated steel sheet supply, they discovered that the manufacturer had been using negative tolerances, which left them frustrated and out of pocket. Although quoting by ton may be slightly more complex, it helps prevent manufacturers from cutting corners. I gave them a thumbs-up for their insight.
This experience highlights the importance of understanding the nuances of pricing structures in construction materials. While meter-based pricing might seem more straightforward, ton-based pricing can offer better transparency and fairness, especially in situations where quality control is critical.
