Today, an online customer reached out to ask whether the pricing for steel structure floor decking is calculated by square meter or ton. I want to address this question here because I believe it could be useful for anyone looking into purchasing floor decking.
In reality, there are actually three main ways to calculate the cost of floor decking: by length (meter), by area (square meter), and by weight (ton). These methods are fundamentally equivalent and can easily be converted between one another. Typically, larger projects tend to be quoted based on meter measurements.
However, there are also smaller projects where the calculation is done by meter. We've encountered quite a few internet customers with smaller projects asking for prices based on meter lengths because the converted price seems lower.
For instance, take the closed-profile sheet YXB65-185-555, which is 0.75 mm thick, priced at 80 yuan per square meter. Converted into meters, this becomes 80 x 0.72 = 57.6 yuan per meter. At first glance, the price appears quite affordable, but it's essentially the same as pricing by square meter.
There are also cases where projects are quoted by ton, though this is less common. Pricing by ton might seem more abstract compared to square meter or meter-based calculations.
Let’s expand on this using the previous example. For the closed-profile sheet YXB66-720, which is also 0.75 mm thick, the price is 80 yuan per square meter. Each square meter weighs 10.8 kg, so converting this to tons gives us 80 x 1000 / 10.8 = 7407 yuan per ton.
We once had a client who requested a quote based on tonnage. When we asked why, they explained that they had previously worked on a project where they lost money due to discrepancies in square meter calculations. During inspections of the profiled steel sheets, they discovered that the supplier had been under-tolerancing their products. This left them frustrated and caused financial losses. Therefore, while quoting by ton may be slightly more complex, it can help prevent manufacturers from cutting corners. I gave them a nod of approval for being thorough.
