Strong snowstorms and frigid air are set to sweep across Northeast China and Xinjiang, impacting a vast swath of the country. Here's what you need to know:
Starting in the early hours of the 13th and continuing into the 14th, heavy snow will blanket significant portions of central Jilin, eastern and central Heilongjiang, as well as the Tianshan region in Xinjiang. Some areas in northern Jilin, eastern Heilongjiang, and the northern Tianshan region in Xinjiang may see up to 13mm of snow, prompting the Central Meteorological Observatory to issue a blizzard warning at 6 a.m. on the 13th.
Meanwhile, light to moderate fog is enveloping parts of southwestern China and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. This morning through tomorrow morning, visibility will dip below 1,000 meters in many areas, particularly in the central Sichuan Basin, southeastern Chongqing, eastern Guizhou, western Hunan, southeastern Yunnan, central Jiangxi, and western Fujian. In certain spots, visibility could plummet to under 500 meters.
A cold front is also moving in, starting to affect Xinjiang on the 13th before spreading eastward across much of China. Temperatures in Xinjiang, the eastern part of the northwestern provinces, and the central-north plateau of Tibet are expected to drop by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius, with some regions experiencing a chilling 12-degree plunge. Other areas will see a more modest 4 to 8 degree decrease. Alongside this cold wave, expect significant snowfall across northern Xinjiang, with some areas facing severe blizzards. These regions will also experience strong northerly winds, reaching up to 6 to 9 levels in the mountain passes of northern Xinjiang.
Looking ahead to the 15th and 16th, moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated in central and eastern Guizhou and northern Jiangnan, with localized downpours possible.
