Gongcheng City has experienced a week of low temperatures and continuous rain, which has caused early peach blossoms planted in the plains and hills to freeze. As a result, it is expected that the yield of early-maturing peach varieties will decrease this year, causing great concern among local farmers.
According to meteorological data, in January, Gongcheng County's weather was significantly warmer than the average over the past 30 years, with the highest number of sunshine hours and the third-highest average temperature. Before and after the Spring Festival, the weather was unusually warm, similar to springtime in March, leading early-maturing peaches to bloom before the festival. Normally, these peaches would only start flowering in mid-February.
The early blooming of peach trees coincided with a sudden drop in temperature, causing damage to the anthers and stigmas of the flowers. Since February 6, a strong cold front from the north brought a sharp drop in temperatures, turning the weather from spring back to winter. The average temperature remained between 4–5°C, with the lowest reaching as low as 1.3°C, and this cold and rainy weather persisted for a full week.
Visitors to Taoyuan in Xiling Township observed that the continuous low temperatures and rain had destroyed the flowers of the early-maturing peaches. An old farmer with 10 mu of early-maturing nectarines expressed his disappointment: "The peach blossoms are so heavy, but the fruit set rate will not exceed half, and this year’s harvest looks very poor."
A technician from the county's plant protection station explained that the total peach-growing area in the county is approximately 39,000 mu, with nearly half being early-maturing varieties. Because the early peaches were in full bloom during the Spring Festival, the prolonged low temperature and rainy weather severely damaged the anthers and stigmas, reducing their fertility.
The county meteorological department reported that by the end of the 13th, the rainfall will gradually subside, and temperatures will slowly rise. On the 15th, there will be a long period of light rain. During this time, temperatures will continue to increase. Experts recommend that farmers closely monitor the weather and apply root fertilizer to the peach trees to help them recover.
