China Weather Network Guangxi Station Report: Gongcheng City experienced a week of cold and rainy weather, causing early peach blossoms in the plains and hills to freeze. This is expected to lead to a significant drop in the production of early-maturing peach varieties this year, greatly disappointing local farmers.
According to meteorological data, in January, Gongcheng County saw more sunshine hours than any other month in the past 30 years, with temperatures ranking third. Before and after the Spring Festival, the weather was unusually warm, resembling spring conditions, which caused early-maturing peaches to bloom before the festival. Normally, these peaches would only start flowering in mid-February.
The early blooming of peach trees coincided with a sudden drop in temperature, leading to frost damage on the anthers and stigmas of the flowers. This has severely impacted the pollination process, reducing the fruit-setting rate.
Since February 6, a strong cold front moved in from the north, causing temperatures to drop sharply in Gongcheng County. The average temperature remained between 4–5°C, with the lowest reaching as low as 1.3°C for a full week, accompanied by continuous low temperatures and rain.
A reporter visited Taoyuan in Xiling Township and observed that the prolonged cold and rainy weather had destroyed the early ripening peach blossoms. A local farmer with 10 mu of early-maturing nectarines expressed his concern, saying, "The peach blossoms are so heavy, but the fruit-setting rate will not even reach half, making this year’s harvest very poor."
According to technicians from the county's plant protection station, the total area under peach cultivation in the county is about 39,000 mu, with nearly half being early-maturing varieties. Since the early peaches were in full bloom during the Spring Festival, the persistent cold and rainy weather caused severe frost damage to the anthers and pistils, significantly reducing their fertility.
The county meteorological department reported that rainfall will gradually decrease by the end of the 13th, with temperatures slowly rising. On the 15th, there will be a long period of light rain.
