Explosive gas atmospheres are zoned according to the frequency, duration, and risk of explosive gas mixtures. That is, zoning is based on different conditions in which explosive gas mixtures occur continuously or in a long-term or short-term.
The explosive gas environment is divided into three hazardous areas:
(1) Zone 0: An environment in which explosive gas mixtures occur continuously or over a long period of time;
(2) Zone 1: The environment in which explosive gas mixtures may occur during normal operation;
(3) Zone 2: The environment in which explosive gas mixtures cannot occur during normal operation, or even the presence of explosive gas mixtures that are present only for a short period of time.
