On October 30, the Hunan Administration for Industry and Commerce released the "Quality Inspection Bulletin for the Third Quarter of 2013," revealing that a product bearing the trademark "Xingli," with a production date or batch number marked as "2013," and manufactured by Shenzhen Fashion Ou Rui Furniture Co., Ltd., was placed on the quality black list due to excessive formaldehyde emissions. This incident has raised concerns about product safety and brand accountability.
Public records indicate that Ou Rui Furniture is the flagship brand under the Hong Kong-based Xingli Group. Established in 2001, the company operates under the name Shenzhen Fashion Ou Rui Furniture Co., Ltd. It's important to note that "Xingli" refers to the parent group, not the actual brand name. Products from Ou Rui should be labeled with "Ou Rui" and may also include "Xing Li" as a secondary identifier, which has led to confusion among consumers and dealers alike.
In the furniture industry, the Xingli Group is well-known not only for its strong market presence but also for being one of the first Shenzhen-based companies to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Despite this reputation, the recent quality issue has sparked questions about the company’s supply chain and product oversight.
Following the announcement of the blacklisted product, a company representative stated that the failed inspection involved a standard 5-door wardrobe made from MDF (medium-density fiberboard). However, some retailers were still selling the item. In response, Xingli Group clarified that the product in question was not sold through official Ou Rui stores or produced at their factories. The company acknowledged the possibility of counterfeit products being sold under the Ou Rui brand and promised to investigate further.
To address the concerns, Xingli Group commissioned independent testing agencies in both Beijing and Shenzhen to evaluate the affected wardrobes. The results showed that formaldehyde emissions met national safety standards. Nevertheless, the company admitted that the incident exposed gaps in brand and channel management. They have since pledged to strengthen their control over distribution channels to prevent similar issues in the future.
This event serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and quality assurance in the furniture industry. As consumer awareness grows, brands must ensure that their products meet strict safety standards and maintain clear, consistent labeling practices. For now, Xingli Group is taking steps to rebuild trust and reinforce its commitment to quality. (Editor: Peter)
