On October 30, the Hunan Administration for Industry and Commerce released the "Quality Inspection Bulletin for the Third Quarter of 2013," which revealed that a product bearing the trademark "Xingli" with a production date or batch number of "2013" and manufactured by Shenzhen Fashion Ou Rui Furniture Co., Ltd. was placed on the quality black list due to excessive formaldehyde emissions. This incident has raised concerns about product safety and brand accountability.
Public records indicate that Ou Rui Furniture is the first fashion brand under the Hong Kong-based Xingli Group. Established in 2001, the company operates under the name Shenzhen Fashion Ou Rui Furniture Co., Ltd. However, it's important to note that "Xingli" refers to the group itself, not the brand. Products from Ou Rui should be labeled as "Ou Rui," while some items are mistakenly marked as "Xing Li." This inconsistency suggests confusion in labeling practices, possibly stemming from unauthorized agents or third-party sellers.
In the furniture industry, Xingli Group is well-known not only for its financial strength but also because it was one of the first Shenzhen-based companies to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This reputation makes the recent quality issue even more concerning.
Following the listing on the black list, a company representative stated that the failed product was a standard five-door wardrobe made from MDF (medium-density fiberboard). Although some dealers were still selling the item, the company clarified that the product in question was not sold through Ou Rui’s official stores or produced in their factories. The company also warned that counterfeit products bearing the Ou Rui trademark could be entering the market, and they are currently investigating the source of the issue.
To address the concern, Xingli Group commissioned independent testing agencies in Beijing and Shenzhen to evaluate the affected wardrobes. According to the results, the formaldehyde emissions met national safety standards. Despite this, the company acknowledged that the incident highlights gaps in brand and channel management. They have pledged to enhance their oversight and prevent similar issues in the future.
This event underscores the importance of strict quality control and clear branding in the furniture sector. As consumers become more aware of product safety, companies must ensure transparency and accountability at every stage of production and distribution.
