Shu Xi, also known as "Long Shu Gong Xi," has a rich historical background. According to legend, during the Tianshun era of the Ming Dynasty, Qin Shuyue, an official from Shucheng, presented a dragon-patterned Shu Xi as a tribute to Kyoto. The emperor was so pleased that he granted it the title "Top Mountain Qizhu, Long Shu Gongxi." This recognition significantly boosted its value, leading to a surge in demand and the rise of numerous weaving workshops.
In 1906, during the Guangxu period, Shu Xi won first prize at the Panama International Commodities Competition. The following year, it also took first prize at the Chicago International Commodities Competition. Additionally, Shu Xi from Qianhe County’s Gonghe Commune earned a first prize at the Nanyang Games.
Shu Xi continued to gain international acclaim, winning the "Gold Medal" at the Shanghai National Exhibition in 1926 and the "Silver Shield" at the Hangzhou National Exhibition in 1934. Before the Anti-Japanese War, Japan's Maeda Bank even sent a special envoy to Shucheng to order an eight-foot-wide, ten-foot-long Shu Xi for Emperor Hirohito's wedding.
For nearly a century, Shu Xi has been popular both domestically and internationally, with large quantities exported overseas. It is a traditional Chinese handicraft made from fine water bamboo. The process involves cutting, scraping, boiling, and drying the bamboo before weaving it into elegant seats. The result is smooth, bright, and durable, with continuous folds and excellent cooling properties.
The selection of materials is strict, with small-leaf water bamboo being the best choice. Harvesting is done between November and February to prevent insect damage. After removing imperfections, the bamboo is carefully processed through dozens of meticulous steps, reflecting the complexity and artistry of the craft.
In the 1930s, foreign traders attempted to replicate the technique using church connections but failed due to its complexity. Shu Xi is not only a practical summer item but also a beautiful handicraft. It can be woven with various designs, including landscapes, calligraphy, mythical stories, and more, creating a unique artistic style.
With a history of over 2,000 years, Shu Xi is a symbol of Chinese craftsmanship. Made from thin water bamboo, each mat consists of over 1,500 pieces of bamboo rafts, each just 0.5 mm thick and 2 mm wide. Handwoven, these mats are easy to clean and can last up to 20 years or more.
