Shu Xi, also known as "Long Shu Gong Xi," has a rich historical background. According to legend, during the Tianshun era of the Ming Dynasty, Qin Shuyue, an official from Shucheng, presented a dragon-patterned Shu Xi as a tribute to Kyoto, which earned the emperor's approval. This led to the royal title "Top Mountain Qizhu, Long Shu Gong Xi." As a result, the value of Shu Xi soared, and a wave of demand emerged, leading to the rise of numerous weaving workshops.
In 1906, during the Guangxu era, Shu Xi gained international recognition by winning first prize at the Panama International Commodities Competition. The following year, it also won first prize at the Chicago International Commodities Competition. Additionally, Shu Xi from Qianhe County’s Gonghe Commune was awarded first prize at the Nanyang Games.
In 1926 and 1934, Shu Xi participated in national exhibitions in Shanghai and Hangzhou, where it received the "Gold Medal" and "Silver Shield" awards respectively. Before the Anti-Japanese War, Japan’s Maeda Bank even sent a special envoy to Shucheng to order an eight-foot-wide and ten-foot-long Shu Xi for Emperor Hirohito’s wedding. For nearly a century, Shu Xi has not only been popular domestically but also exported in large quantities worldwide.
Shu Xi is a traditional Chinese handicraft made from fine materials, especially water bamboo. The process involves cutting, scraping, boiling, and drying the bamboo before weaving it into seats. The final product is bright, smooth, and durable, with continuous folds that make it both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Its cooling properties, resistance to corrosion, and long-lasting quality have made it a favorite for generations.
The selection of materials for Shu Xi is very strict. Only the finest water bamboo, particularly small-leaf water bamboo, is used. To prevent insect damage, the bamboo must be harvested between November and February. After careful sorting and preparation, the bamboo is cut, scraped, boiled, and sun-dried before being woven into intricate patterns.
The production of Shu Xi is highly complex, requiring over a dozen meticulous steps. In the 1930s, foreign merchants attempted to steal the technique through religious channels, but due to its complexity, they failed to replicate it successfully.
Beyond its practical use, Shu Xi is also a beautiful and elegant handicraft. It can depict various themes, such as landscapes, calligraphy, mythical stories, and more, creating a unique artistic style. With a history spanning over 2,000 years, it represents the wisdom of the Chinese nation.
A single bamboo mat can be made from over 1,500 pieces of bamboo, each just 0.5 mm thick and 2 mm wide. Handwoven, these mats are easy to clean and can last up to 20 years or more. In summer, using a bamboo mat with an electric fan creates a cool and comfortable environment. The natural fibers absorb sweat and regulate body temperature, making it ideal for children and the elderly who may not tolerate air conditioning well.
The production process of Yiyang Shuizhu mat involves 13 manual steps, including chopping, cutting, cooking, weaving, and sewing. Special treatment ensures the mat remains soft and resistant to breaking, while also preventing pests like bamboo mealworms. With proper care, a bamboo mat can last for decades.
Even in the hottest days of summer, people can sleep on Shu Xi mats and feel refreshed. Over time, the color changes from green to orange or brown, becoming more refined and clear. Bamboo silk mats offer superior breathability, flexibility, and comfort compared to cotton, wool, or hemp. They naturally regulate temperature and humidity, generate negative oxygen ions, and create a fresh, soothing environment similar to being in a bamboo forest.
Bamboo fiber also has strong antibacterial properties. Studies show that it can sterilize bacteria more effectively than cotton, with 70% effectiveness versus 0% for cotton. It also helps reduce odors, protect the skin, and promote health. Using a bamboo silk mat can improve blood circulation, relieve fatigue, and enhance sleep quality—making it an ideal choice for modern lifestyles.
