Starting March 1, China will officially implement its new national standards for polyethylene (PE-RT) piping systems used for both hot and cold water. This update marks a significant improvement over previous industry guidelines, with enhanced product specifications that are expected to drive better quality and industry growth.
Wang Zhanjie, Secretary-General of the Plastic Pipeline Professional Committee under the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, explained that the new standard was developed by referencing international benchmarks such as ISO-compliant PE-RT systems and Austrian regulations. It also took into account local production capabilities and technical conditions, making it more advanced than earlier versions. The updated standard is seen as a positive step toward improving product quality and fostering sustainable development in the sector.
In recent years, the use of PE-RT pipes has grown rapidly in China, especially in building plumbing applications. Raw material development has also advanced significantly. In 2002, the initial industry standard for PE-RT piping was introduced, based on German standards that focused on Type I materials. However, as technology evolved, Type II PE-RT materials emerged with far superior performance. International standards like ISO 22391 have since been revised to reflect these improvements, raising the bar for Type II piping.
According to industry data, plastic pipe production in China is projected to grow at an average rate of 10% during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period. By 2015, total production was expected to reach nearly 12 million tons, with plastic pipes accounting for over 60% of the market share. Despite this progress, some companies still lack awareness in terms of quality, integrity, brand reputation, and customer service, leading to inconsistent product quality.
Wang Zhanjie noted that while the overall quality of PE-RT systems in China is generally good—especially among major manufacturers—some smaller firms still lag behind in terms of quality control and technical expertise.
The introduction of the new national standard is expected to bring greater clarity and structure to the PE-RT market. By distinguishing between PE-RT I and PE-RT II products, the standard aims to create a more organized and transparent marketplace. This move not only improves consumer confidence but also opens up new opportunities for manufacturers aiming to capture a larger share of the high-end segment.
