Transform irregular oscillation into regular one-way motion - new mechanical energy collection device

According to the report of the Physicists Organization Network on April 25, the team of engineers at the State University of New York at Stony Brook developed a new type of mechanical energy acquisition device that can convert irregular oscillating motions into regular one-way motions and in the same way. The AC voltage of the voltage rectifier is converted to DC. It can be used to regenerate shock absorbers, which is expected to save the United States billions of dollars in fuel costs each year.

Various forms of mechanical energy surround us, such as vehicle vibrations, waves, or train track vibrations, but these energy are all irregular oscillations, and the best regular unidirectional movement can be achieved through energy collection. The research team led by Professor Zuo Lei, an engineer at the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Mechanical Engineering, has been working on energy harvesting devices for the past ten years.

Zuo Lei said: "Based on a mechanism known as Mechanical Motion Rectifier (MMR), we have developed this new type of energy harvesting device that can convert irregular vibrations into regular one-way cyclical motions, just like AC voltages are converted into DC voltage rectification method, which is applied to an automotive suspension or rail as an energy converter, has significant advantages in providing high efficiency and high reliability."

The research team developed a regenerative absorber that collects vehicle vibration energy to prevent it from being wasted as heat and generate enough power to recharge the car battery or power the electronic device. The shock absorbers can be retrofitted to suspension systems for cars, trucks, passenger cars, military vehicles, or installed on train tracks. In prototype tests, fuel efficiency can be increased by 2% to 8% depending on different vehicle types, speeds, and road conditions.

Researchers estimate that a regenerative shock absorber mounted on an ordinary car has the potential to collect 100 watts to 400 watts of energy, while the car consumes about 250 watts to 350 watts of energy (excluding optional accessories such as radios). It can help save up to 4% fuel, while hybrid cars can save 8%. If only 5% of vehicles in the United States use such devices, driving an average of one hour per day can save fuel costs by 3%, saving a total of about $1 billion in gasoline costs annually.

The researchers said that conventional vehicles equipped with this device will take three to four years to recoup the installation cost; hybrid electric vehicles will take two to three years; due to the large scale of trucks and buses, they can recover their costs in just one or two years; Military vehicles can also enjoy great benefits, and their fuel consumption is significantly reduced. As an added benefit, after installing this device, the car's vibrations will be "absorbed" by the regenerative shock absorbers, making it more comfortable to drive. (Hua Ling)

The air conditioning unit consists of an evaporator and a heater core to heat or cool the air in the operator's cab.

The heater core is heated by the hot water from the engine (engine coolant).

The air delivered by the blower fan and the blower motor is heated through the radiator fin of the heater core.
