According to a new issue of the US "Science" magazine, researchers recently used nanotechnology to design a new type of iron catalyst that can turn plants into ordinary plastics.

One of the main components of this new type of catalyst, designed by researchers at The Dow Chemical Company and the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, is nanosized particles that are separated from each other on carbon nanofibers. In the laboratory, the catalyst can efficiently convert hydrogen and carbon dioxide synthesis gas made from plants into ethylene and propylene, the main components of common plastics, and the conversion process will not produce large quantities of useless by-products such as methane.

Previously, bioplastics were mainly made on the basis of crops such as corn under the action of microorganisms. They are renewable and environmentally friendly, but their use is limited. They cannot replace plastics made from petroleum or crude oil by-products.

The plastics made with the new catalysts are the same as the plastics made with petrochemicals, so they have a wider range of uses, but they are also not biodegradable, although the raw materials also come from renewable resources.

Researchers said that "Science" magazine publishes only preliminary research, and related technologies still need large-scale testing and related project testing before they can be put into the market on a large scale. Researchers also plan to replace ordinary food crops with fast-growing trees or grass as raw materials to produce ordinary plastics.
