Testing the Cooperation Between NSK Bearings and Shafts

Ensuring proper cooperation between NSK bearings and the shaft is crucial for the longevity and performance of the bearing. The clearance between the bearing and the shaft must be carefully controlled to avoid excessive wear, vibration, or failure. During the detection of radial clearance in NSK bearings, several methods can be applied.
First, the ruler detection method is suitable for larger diameter NSK bearings where the gap is more significant. In such cases, a narrower feeler gauge can be used directly. However, for smaller diameter bearings, where the gap is minimal, a thickness gauge should be used to measure the side clearance accurately. This helps prevent damage to the bearing during the measurement process.
Another method is the pressure lead detection technique, which is more accurate than the feeler gauge method but comes at a higher cost. For this method, soft aluminum wire is used, with a diameter that is approximately 1.5 to 2 times the expected clearance. In practice, soft lead wires are commonly used due to their ease of deformation and accuracy.
To perform the test, first open the NSK bearing cover, select an appropriate diameter of lead wire, cut it into sections of 15 to 40 mm, and place it on the journal and the upper and lower bearing interfaces. Then, close the bearing cover and tighten the bolts. After loosening the bolts, remove the cover and use a micrometer to measure the flattened wire’s thickness. The average value obtained represents the top clearance of the NSK bearing.
If the clearance is too small, it may cause overheating and premature failure. If it's too large, it could result in instability or misalignment. In such cases, adjustments can be made by reducing the thickness of the pad, scraping the surface, or recasting the bearing tile.
Adjusting the bearing bushing force is also important to prevent any axial movement or shifting of the bushing during operation. In addition to interference fits and stop parts, the bearing bush must be pressed against the NSK bearing cap. The same measuring method used for radial clearance can be applied here, using soft lead wire to determine the thickness and calculate the bushing force.
Typically, the bearing bushing force should be between 0.02 and 0.04 mm. If the measured force does not meet the required specifications, it can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the thickness of the gasket at the joint between the NSK bearing and the housing. It is important to note that padding the back of the tile is not allowed.
In addition to radial clearance, sliding bearings must also ensure proper axial clearance. To detect axial clearance, move the shaft to one end, then use a feeler gauge or dial indicator to measure the distance between the two ends. The measured value represents the axial clearance. If the clearance is not within the acceptable range, adjustments should be made accordingly. Split NSK bearings often use shims to adjust radial clearance.
