When it comes to faucet materials, copper is currently the top choice for manufacturing. Most faucets available in the market, especially in Europe and America, are made from brass—a combination of copper and zinc. A small amount of lead is often added during the production process to improve the cutting performance of the material. Without lead, the brass could become difficult to shape and might crack due to stress corrosion, even after being manufactured.

Copper-based faucets have long been associated with lead, yet they remain the standard in developed countries. The reason lies in copper’s natural antibacterial properties. Historical records show that ancient Egyptians used copper for wound disinfection, treating eye infections, and purifying drinking water as early as 2500 BC. Modern research supports this—authorities like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirm that copper can kill over 99.9% of bacteria within an hour, making it one of the most effective antimicrobial surfaces available. No other material, such as silver-coated or stainless steel, can match this level of effectiveness.

Copper is particularly effective against dangerous superbugs like MRSA, and bacteria cannot develop resistance to it. Unlike other materials such as stainless steel or plastic, copper faucet interiors do not support bacterial growth. With the development of low-lead copper (with less than 0.25% lead), the antibacterial benefits have improved further. This suggests that copper will continue to be the best choice for faucet manufacturing in the future.

Causes and Risks of Lead in Brass Faucets

In China, the main material used for faucet production is HPb59 brass, which contains less than 1.9% lead. However, some manufacturers may use higher lead content—up to 3%–6%—to cut costs and improve machinability. During the casting process, which occurs at around 1053°C, lead, with a melting point of 327.5°C, tends to separate on the surface, resulting in lead concentrations up to 3–5 times higher on the outer layer. Although a lead removal process can be applied, water flowing through the faucet can erode this layer, causing corrosion and exposing internal lead ions, which increases lead leaching into the water.

To address this issue, the U.S. introduced low-lead copper to reduce the risk of lead contamination. Lead is one of the most harmful heavy metals, especially for children. Their bodies absorb lead more easily—up to five times more than adults—and they are far more sensitive to its effects. Even small amounts of lead in blood, such as 50–60 micrograms per 100 ml, can cause poisoning in children, while adults may tolerate up to 80–100 micrograms. Studies show that children with high lead levels tend to have lower IQ scores, affecting their cognitive and language abilities significantly.

Lead Limits and Testing Standards in China and Abroad

The lead content in faucets is measured in two ways: either as the percentage of lead in the raw material or as the amount of lead leached into water, often expressed in micrograms per liter or by the Q value. It's important to note that meeting raw material standards doesn't guarantee compliance with leaching standards. Consumers should be aware of this distinction when choosing a product.

The NSF61 standard in the U.S. is widely recognized, and the Chinese standard JC/T1043-2007 aligns closely with it. According to JC/T1043, at least three samples of the same model must be tested. Water is changed every two hours over several days, and samples are taken on specific days for testing. The standard requires the lead leaching value to be below 11 µg, while the updated GB18145 standard in 2014 sets a stricter limit of 5 µg. These values depend on the product size and stability, so proper testing is crucial. In China, reputable testing institutions include the National Plumbing Hardware Testing Center and the Guangzhou CQC Laboratory under the China Quality Certification Center.
