Faucets are typically made from copper, which is considered the best material for manufacturing today. Most faucets on the market, especially in Europe and America, are made of brass—a combination of copper and zinc. A small amount of lead is often added during production to improve the machinability of the brass. Without lead, the material may be difficult to cut and forge, and even if it’s made into a finished product, it could crack due to poor resistance to stress corrosion.
Despite the presence of lead, copper faucets remain popular in developed countries. This is mainly because of copper's natural antibacterial properties. Historical records show that ancient Egyptians used copper for wound disinfection, treating eye infections, and purifying drinking water as early as 2500 BC. Modern research supports this—according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), copper can kill over 99.9% of bacteria within an hour, making it the most effective antimicrobial surface material available. No other material, such as silver-coated surfaces or stainless steel, can match its effectiveness.
Copper has proven to be highly effective against dangerous bacteria like MRSA, and these pathogens cannot develop immunity to it. The inner walls of copper faucets do not support bacterial growth, which is a major advantage over materials like stainless steel or plastic. This leads to increased lead leaching into the water supply. To address this, the U.S. introduced low-lead copper standards to minimize lead exposure.

When it comes to lead content, there are two main ways to measure it: the percentage of lead in the raw material and the amount of lead leached into water after testing. These are different metrics, so meeting one doesn’t guarantee the other. For example, the NSF61 standard in the U.S. sets strict limits on lead leaching, and China's JC/T1043 standard follows similar requirements. Testing involves immersing samples in water for extended periods and measuring lead levels. The latest Chinese standard, GB18145, requires a Q value of 5ug, ensuring safer products for consumers.
