Home improvement knowledge: 6 installation specifications for toilets

(1) Start by removing the pipe plug from the ground drain and inspect the inside of the pipe to ensure there is no debris. Once cleared, clean the surrounding area thoroughly to avoid any blockages later on.

(2) Align the toilet’s outlet pipe with the water outlet, making sure it is level. Use a marker to draw a line on the hole where the toilet bolts will go, then carefully remove the toilet for further preparation.

(3) Drill a 20 mm diameter hole that is 60 mm deep at the marked spot. Insert a 10 mm diameter bolt into the hole and secure it with cement. Place the toilet flange over the bolt and align it properly. After testing, remove the toilet again. Apply putty around the toilet outlet and the lower water pipe. Then, realign the four bolt holes of the toilet with the bolts, make sure it's level, place rubber washers on each bolt, screw on the nuts, and tighten them securely but not excessively.

(4) Locate the center of the back end of the toilet and draw a vertical line. Measure up 800 mm from the floor and draw a horizontal line. Mark the positions of the two side holes on the back of the tank. Drill 30 mm diameter holes that are 70 mm deep. Insert a 10 mm diameter bolt, 100 mm in length, into each hole and fix it with cement. Hang the back water tank onto the bolt and lay it flat. Make sure it is perfectly aligned with the center of the toilet bowl. Place a rubber washer on the bolt, screw on the nut, and tighten it firmly.

(5) When installing the water tank elbow, begin by loosening the nut on the back water tank and the toilet’s water inlet. Place both parts back to back on the water elbow, and insert a rubber gasket between them. Push the top end of the sewer elbow into the drain of the back tank, and the bottom end into the toilet bowl’s water inlet. Slide the rubber gasket into place, screw on the nut, straighten the elbow, and tighten it using pliers—just enough to be secure without over-tightening.

(6) When connecting the water supply to the eight-character valve, first measure the size of the water tank opening. Cut and fit a short section of pipe accordingly. Install the eight-character valve and insert it into the upper water pipe. If needed, cut the copper or plastic tube, bend the fitting, and reattach the valve and the flare nut. Wrap both ends of the tube with oil-soaked asbestos rope or lead compound and twine. Tighten the nuts on both sides of the valve to ensure a secure connection.
