Rolling bearings are essential components in many mechanical systems. They consist of inner and outer rings (ferrules), rolling elements (such as balls or rollers), and a cage that keeps the rolling elements separated. These parts work together to reduce friction and support loads efficiently.
The inner and outer rings are subjected to high contact pressure on one side while the rolling elements move with a combination of rolling and sliding motion. This interaction leads to complex stress conditions, including tension, compression, and shear forces. As a result, the materials used for these components must meet strict performance requirements.
The key properties required for the rings and rolling elements include high rolling fatigue strength, excellent hardness, and strong wear resistance. The cage material should have good dimensional stability, high mechanical strength, and good machinability. Additionally, depending on the application, it may also need to offer impact resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance.
In most cases, the rings and rolling elements are made from high-carbon chromium bearing steel. In Japan, this is often referred to as JIS SUJ2 or SUJ3. Internationally, similar grades include AISI 52100 (USA), DIN 100Cr6 (Germany), and BS 535A99 (UK). These steels have been standardized globally due to their reliable performance.
For applications requiring higher impact resistance, carburized steels such as chrome steel, chrome-molybdenum steel, or nickel-chrome-molybdenum steel are used. These materials undergo carburizing to create a hardened surface layer at a suitable depth, ensuring both surface hardness and core toughness. This makes them more durable under heavy loads and shock conditions.
Modern manufacturing processes often involve vacuum degassing to improve material cleanliness and reduce oxygen content, resulting in higher quality bearings. Proper heat treatment further enhances the life and performance of the rolling elements.
In addition to standard bearing steels, special applications may use high-speed steel for heat resistance or stainless steel for corrosion resistance. For the cage, low-carbon steel is commonly used, but other materials like brass or stainless steel plates may be chosen based on specific needs. Cutting tools for cages can be made from high-strength brass, carbon steel, or even synthetic resins.
Understanding the materials and design of rolling bearings is crucial for selecting the right component for your application. Whether it's for industrial machinery, automotive systems, or precision equipment, proper bearing selection ensures smooth operation and long service life.
