The Future Prospects of the Credit Card-Operated Self-Service Car Wash Industry
In 2013, China surpassed the United States in total car ownership, with private vehicles exceeding 100 million. According to the "China Automotive Social Development Report 2012-2013" released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, it was predicted that by the first quarter of that year, private car ownership would surpass 100 million units (excluding taxis). In about a decade, the number of vehicles per 100 people is expected to reach or approach 60. Looking at global trends, when per capita GDP reaches $1,000, cars begin to enter households. When it hits $3,000, mass adoption follows. Many cities in China now exceed this threshold, marking a period of rapid growth in personal vehicle ownership. In numerous large and medium-sized cities, buying a family car has become a common trend.

This indicates vast potential in China's automotive aftermarket. In the car wash industry alone, the average number of washes per car is estimated at 7 billion annually. However, there are fewer than 160,000 car wash stations across shops and roads. This means each car wash facility serves over 40,000 private vehicles yearly. Most city centers do not allow car wash stations, so many are located on the outskirts. As a result, customers often face long waits or have to drive far to get their cars washed. During holidays, it becomes even more inconvenient—expensive and hard to find a place to wash. Traditional car washes rely on high-pressure water guns connected to tap water and a few towels, making labor and rent the biggest costs.

For example, in Beijing and Shanghai in 2013, the number of cars reached 5.2 million and 3 million respectively. This highlights the immense potential of the Chinese automotive aftermarket. With an average washing frequency of every 5–8 days, and a cost of 20 yuan per wash, annual spending on car washes by private car owners could exceed 100 billion yuan. As labor and real estate costs continue to rise, car wash prices will also increase. Consumers will increasingly face challenges: difficulty finding a wash, high costs, and limited options. Therefore, self-service car wash machines are becoming an inevitable trend in China.
