Beware of furniture stealing

In a recent comprehensive investigation, the Zhejiang Provincial Consumer Protection Committee and the Zhejiang Furniture Product Quality Inspection Center examined 128 solid wood furniture retailers across seven major furniture markets in Hangzhou. Among well-known brands like Shaoxing Sanshan and Huaye, the pass rate for products labeled as "all solid wood" was found to be 0%. This shocking result has raised serious concerns about the accuracy of product labeling in the furniture industry. The furniture market, especially during holiday seasons, is dominated by three key items: sofas, beds, and wardrobes. These products are often promoted with eye-catching discounts and price reductions, making them highly attractive to consumers. However, despite the high demand for both high-end and budget-friendly furniture, complaints have been on the rise. The terms "all solid wood" and "foreign brand" are frequently used to draw in buyers, but many consumers find themselves confused and unable to distinguish genuine products from misleading ones. One consumer, Xiao Zhao, shared her experience: “The wardrobe felt very heavy, so I assumed it was real wood. After spending time investigating, I discovered it was actually MDF with veneer. The store claimed it was 'solid wood,' but not pure.” This kind of deceptive labeling is becoming increasingly common, leaving many buyers feeling cheated. Solid wood furniture has long been a top choice for those seeking environmentally friendly, healthy, and durable options. However, the market feedback suggests that complaints related to solid wood furniture are rising significantly. According to the "General Technical Conditions for Wooden Furniture," furniture is categorized into three types: solid wood, wood-based panels, and composite furniture. Some small workshops have become adept at imitating real solid wood, producing items that look nearly identical to authentic pieces. From an outsider’s perspective, these fakes can be hard to tell apart. Experts warn that many so-called "pure solid wood" products actually use multi-layer boards, particleboard, or even MDF in areas that are not easily visible. These products are sold at premium prices, taking advantage of the high value associated with solid wood. According to national standards, furniture must contain more than 70% solid wood to be officially classified as such. Terms like "pure solid wood," "raw wood," or "eco-friendly solid wood" are not recognized in official regulations and are considered misleading marketing tactics. Currently, most bed frames and wardrobes on the market are made using wood, but since their surfaces are often painted, it's difficult for consumers to identify the internal materials. Buyers should remain vigilant to avoid being misled by fake solid wood products disguised as high-quality wood. Another major issue in the furniture market is the practice of branding domestic products as foreign imports. One consumer, Xiao Wu, expressed frustration: “It’s clearly a domestic product, but they give it a foreign name and claim it’s imported. How can I trust the price?” The exposure of the "Da Vinci" furniture scandal by CCTV’s Weekly Quality Report sparked widespread public concern over this deceptive practice. Many well-known brands, which consumers believe to be authentic, are actually selling imitation products. Sales staff often exploit customers' desire for lower prices, while also maximizing their own profits. In some cases, these so-called imported brands don’t even have legitimate English websites, raising further doubts about their authenticity. Industry insiders revealed that many mahogany furniture companies lack large-scale production facilities. Due to limited capacity, they often source semi-finished or finished products from small workshops at low costs. After minimal processing, these products are resold under their own brand names at much higher prices. The quality of OEM-produced mahogany furniture is often inconsistent, and after-sales service is typically poor. As the furniture market continues to grow, it's crucial for consumers to stay informed and cautious. With increasing instances of mislabeling and false advertising, buyers must take extra steps to verify product authenticity before making a purchase.
