US researchers have developed a new type of paint to keep buildings cool under the scorching sun

The sun is like a fire, it will damage the super structure, and the temperature of the grilled metal slides and the bleachers is too high to be used. To protect against the heat of the sun, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have developed a new environmentally friendly glass coating that reflects sunlight, keeps buildings cool and makes them more durable.

The research team presented the results at the 250th National Conference and Expo held by the American Chemical Society (ACS) on the 16th.

Dr. Jason, of the School's Applied Physics Laboratory, said: "The coatings used in cars or houses are mostly based on polymers, which degrade under the ultraviolet rays of the sun. After a while, there will be chalking and yellowing. And, polymerization. Things tend to release volatile organic compounds and harm the environment. So we want to change from traditional polymer coatings to inorganic glass coatings."

Glass made of silicon is an ideal coating that is rugged and has suitable optical properties. However, it is very fragile. According to a report by the Physicist Network on August 16, in order to add this special layer to the new paint, Jason began to use silicon, the most abundant material in the earth's crust. He improved the potassium silicate, which is usually dissolved in water, and made the compound into a silicate-mixed "lacquer" which was sprayed onto the surface of the object to dry and then function as a waterproof.

Unlike acrylic, polyurethane or epoxy coatings, this paint is almost completely inorganic and more durable than other organic compounds. It is designed to expand and contract with the metal surface to prevent cracking. In addition, it has a prominent feature: it has the ability to reflect all sunlight and passive radiant heat. Because it does not absorb sunlight, any surface that is coated with this paint will remain warm, even cooler, which is the key to its ability to withstand the sun's protective building structure.

In fact, the researchers developed the new paint, which was originally used in naval vessels, but found that it has many potential uses for commercial applications.

Dr. Jason said: "You can apply this paint on your own roof, keep the temperature and lower the billing figures for summer air conditioners, and use them on metal slides or on the bleachers. And its price you can afford Because the raw materials needed make it both rich and cheap."
