Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is facing serious threats due to rising ocean temperatures and acidification.
Recent breakthroughs by U.S. scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have introduced a promising new method for capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This innovative technology not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also offers a potential solution to combat ocean acidification, which poses a major threat to marine ecosystems.
The process involves using seawater electrolysis to produce acid, which in turn accelerates the breakdown of silicate minerals. As a result, hydrogen fuel and other gases are generated. After testing, researchers found that the hydroxide concentration in the electrolyte increased significantly, indicating strong carbon dioxide absorption and retention capabilities.
Furthermore, the carbonates and bicarbonates produced through this method can be used to neutralize ocean acidity. The mechanism is similar to how Alka Seltzer works in the stomach—by reacting with excess acid to restore balance.
Lead researcher Greg Rao explained, "We’ve developed a way to remove and store carbon dioxide from the air while also generating valuable hydrogen. We believe this technology could play a key role in protecting our oceans and marine life." The study was recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
When carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, a large portion is absorbed by the oceans, forming carbonic acid and increasing seawater acidity. This has devastating effects on coral reefs, shellfish, and many other marine species. Scientists predict that by the middle of this century, global temperatures could rise by at least 2°C, and ocean acidity could increase by over 60% compared to pre-industrial levels.
To address this, the alkaline solution created by the new technology could be injected into the ocean to help neutralize the acid, offering a practical approach to safeguarding marine environments. This development highlights the growing importance of science in tackling climate change and preserving our planet's natural resources. (Shang Li)
