My three days: Aoma furniture packaging staff

As a member of the packaging department at Aoma Furniture Factory, 18-year-old Liu Qiang starts his day at 8 a.m. Compared to the high-tech and demanding work in other departments, the packaging team requires more attention to detail and precision. Although Liu Qiang isn’t as fast as the experienced workers, he learns quickly and can usually finish his daily tasks within regular hours, even when dealing with complex packaging. However, there are times when orders pile up, forcing him to stay late until 9:30 p.m. “If I don’t finish, I just keep working,” he said casually.

Today, Liu Qiang’s luck was good. He received orders that involved small parts—something he’s already comfortable with. While the older workers complained about his slow pace, he found the work manageable. During breaks, he muttered, “I want to do it right, not take shortcuts.” By lunchtime, he had already completed over half of his tasks. After eating, he took a short nap. At the end of the shift, he proudly announced, “I finished nearly 500 packages today!”

At 18, Liu Qiang is full of curiosity and questions about the world. He loves sci-fi and action movies and has just stepped into the adult world, but he still feels lost. “Even though I’m the youngest here, I feel like I fit in, but I don’t know why. We don’t hang out much or talk much.” In his free time, he reads books and writes in a diary to pass the time. When he’s feeling down, he listens to rock music; when he’s happy, he prefers something more emotional. He doesn’t play games or scroll through his phone. “Since coming to Shenzhen, I’ve changed a lot. I used to avoid people and didn’t like reading. There were a lot of problems. But in this fast-paced city, I feel a lot.” He smiled and added, “I actually like Shenzhen.”

“—If you could go back in time, would you choose the same career?”

“—If I could do it all over again, I’d start a small business and live a peaceful, stable life.”
