Israel and the United States jointly develop cheap and efficient energy storage batteries

The Israel Institute of Technology recently said that researchers are working with Primus Technologies to develop lower-cost and more efficient energy storage batteries to store electrical energy generated by solar and wind energy. The research is expected to help Israel be at the forefront of the world’s renewable energy revolution in the next three years.

Globally, the main obstacle facing the full replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy is the lack of cheap and large-capacity energy storage methods. The energy storage battery under development uses zinc and bromine instead of the high-priced metal lithium used in mobile phones and notebook computers.

Primus Technologies currently sells energy storage batteries using bromine and zinc on the market, suitable for storing electrical energy generated by wind and solar energy. However, the energy stored per unit (sold in groups) of existing products is only 125 kWh.

Matthew Suss, the research leader and assistant professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering at the Israel Institute of Technology, said his team is close to the medium-term goal of storing 175 kWh of energy in the same size battery unit as the market. It is believed that the three-year At the end of the project, batteries with 250 kWh of energy storage will enter the market.

Sousse said they hope that the new battery will become an important global energy storage system and at the same time help Israel's development, because there is bromine. Information shows that the Israeli chemical company is already the world's largest bromine producer. In September 2019, it announced that it would invest US$50 million to expand the capacity of its plant in the Dead Sea.

He believes that Israel has plenty of sunshine and sufficient bromine production, and the new energy storage battery research project is expected to become a catalyst for pushing Israel to the forefront of the renewable energy revolution.

According to the plan of the Israel Institute of Technology and Primus Technology Corporation, the laboratory will undertake two years of research, and the company will conduct one year of commercial development. The funding comes from the bi-national industrial research and development (BIRD) foundation established by the US and Israel governments. The agency was established in 1977 to promote mutually beneficial cooperation between companies in the United States and Israel. (Reporter Mao Li)

It is a construction product that is made by casting concrete in a reusable mold or "formwork", then curing it in a controlled environment, transporting it to the construction site and lifting it in place ("tilting upward "). Instead, the standard concrete is poured into the form of a specific location and cured on site. Recently, expanded polystyrene has been used as the core of prefabricated wall panels. It is lightweight and has better thermal insulation properties.
