According to foreign media reports, the Belgian Microelectronics Research Center (IMEC) announced that it has cooperated with EnergyVille to jointly launch a solid-state lithium metal battery. The energy density of the battery exceeds 400 Wh / liter, and the charging speed is increased to 2 hours (0.5C). The battery can be fully charged. In addition, IMEC also announced that it has upgraded the battery materials and battery technology on the solid-state battery pack trial production line at the EnergyVille Park in Genk, Belgium; and has also established cooperation with the University of Hasselt in Belgium. According to its solid-state battery development roadmap, IMEC's goal is to allow solid-state lithium metal batteries to surpass wet-type lithium-ion batteries by 2024, and to achieve 1000Wh / L and a charging rate of 2-3C.

The current rechargeable lithium-ion battery still has room for improvement, but it is still not enough to improve the range and automation of electric vehicles. Therefore, IMEC researchers are working to replace the wet electrolyte with solid materials, thus providing the possibility of further improving the energy density of the battery. The solid-state nanocomposite electrolyte studied by the R & D center has a conductivity of up to 10mS / cm, and has the potential to achieve higher conductivity. This new material has a distinctive feature. When it is applied, it is a liquid, and when it is applied to the electrode through the wet chemical coating method, the material becomes solid. Therefore, this material is very suitable for being cast into a dense powder electrode, which can fill the gaps in the electrode, like liquid electrolyte, and in close contact with other parts of the electrode.

Using this solid-state nanocomposite electrolyte, combined with a standard lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode and metal lithium anode, the performance of the battery made by IMEC is improved, the energy density exceeds 400Wh / liter, and the charging speed is increased to 2 hours (0.5C). It is a record-breaking achievement for solid-state batteries.

In addition, IMEC also began to upgrade the solid-state battery technology in the most advanced laboratory, which has a 300 square meter battery assembly test production line, including a 100 square meter drying room. The traditional A4 board-to-board wet coating production line is very suitable for processing IMEC's innovative solid electrolytes. Therefore, only a few modifications to the current production line for the production of lithium-ion batteries can produce new types of batteries, which means that new technologies from wet batteries There is no expensive cost to switch to a solid-state battery. The new pilot production line is set up in the EnergyVille Park and was established in cooperation with Hasselt University to produce prototypes of battery packs with a capacity of up to 5 Ah. The production line will become a base for research teams and companies to develop battery research and development projects.
