New progress has been made in the planarization of zinc-manganese microbatteries at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Recently, a team of Wu Zhongshuai, a researcher of two-dimensional materials and energy devices at the Dalian Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has developed low-cost, large-scale screen printing technology to prepare secondary water planes with good commercial application prospects, high flexibility, high safety and long life Zinc-manganese microbatteries, the relevant progress was published in the "National Science Review" (National Science Review). In addition, in the same periodical, Professor Sang-Young Lee, a miniature energy storage expert at the National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in Ulsan, South Korea, wrote a review article for this article: "Scaleable, safer, and printable zinc-manganese planar microbatteries Widely used in intelligent electronic devices ", highly praised the work.

The development of a new generation of miniaturized and wearable electronic products has greatly stimulated people's urgent need for matching new concepts, high-security, long-life micro-energy storage devices, especially planar micro batteries. The planarized mini battery has the characteristics of high integration and integration, which overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional sandwich configuration battery, such as large size, poor mechanical flexibility, and easy separation of the interface under bending. It is a new type of wearable electronic device power source with great development prospects. .

In order to further improve the safety performance of battery power sources, researchers are actively developing high-safety water-based electrolytes to replace combustible organic electrolytes, and to build highly safe water-based planar miniature batteries. Among them, because of the rich reserves of electrode materials, zinc-manganese aqueous batteries have attracted much attention. However, at present, the key preparation technology for developing highly safe, low-cost planar zinc-manganese batteries that are highly compatible with integrated electronic devices is still very lacking.

To solve this problem, the team developed a low-cost, simple, efficient, and large-scale screen printing technology, and successfully prepared a new concept water-based planar zinc-manganese microbattery with good mechanical flexibility, high safety, and long life. . The researchers first used manganese dioxide, zinc powder, and graphene as functional materials to configure the positive and negative electrodes of the zinc-manganese battery and the graphene current collector thixotropic ink; and then used a multi-step screen printing method to achieve planarization Zinc-manganese microbatteries are simple, low-cost, and large-scale.

Zinc-manganese battery not only has the characteristics of environmental friendliness and high safety, but also shows an ultra-long working life. It can still maintain a specific capacity of 83.9% at 1300 cycles at a current density of 5C, and has good mechanical flexibility and performance. consistency. In addition, the diversity of printed substrates can meet the needs of different application scenarios. Moreover, screen printing is a mature technology in the industry.

This work proposed a large-scale method for the preparation of planarized zinc-manganese microbatteries with great industrial application prospects, and also provided new ideas for the development of other planar flexible energy storage devices. (Author: Wang Xiao HOU Xiao Liu Wansheng City)
