Under the support of the “973” project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Solar Energy Action Plan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the thermoacoustic research team led by Luo Ercang, a researcher at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has a high-power thermoacoustic engine/thermoacoustic power generation technology. Achieving a breakthrough, it has been proposed and developed for the first time in the world that an “acoustic resonant gas double-acting thermoacoustic engine/generator prototype prototype” has achieved a maximum sound power output of 10 kW, a generating power of 7.2 kWe, and a maximum power generation efficiency. Up to 20% is the most successful thermodynamic power generation system that has been successfully developed in the world (currently the world's largest power generation is only 1kWe). It is also the world's first prototype machine developed based on this new thermoacoustic power generation process.

The thermoacoustic power generation technology is a brand-new heat power conversion and power generation technology. The thermoacoustic power generation system is mainly composed of a thermoacoustic engine and a linear generator. The thermoacoustic power generation technology has the advantages of high reliability, environmental protection, and high potential efficiency. It is a cutting-edge high-tech and research hotspot in the fields of engineering thermophysics and power machinery in the past decade or so. At present, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Israel, and Japan are all vigorously conducting research on thermoacoustic power generation technology.

Previously, the team developed the traditional traveling wave thermoacoustic power generation system (Zhanghua Wu, Limin Zhang, Wei Dai, Ercang Luo*, Investigation on a 1kW traveling wave thermoacoustic electrical generator, Applied Energy 2014, 124: 140-147) and mechanical resonance. Double-acting thermoacoustic power generation system (Zhanghua Wu, Guoyao Yu, Limin Zhang, Wei Dai, Ercang Luo*, Investigation of a 3kW double-acting thermoacoustic electrical generator, Applied Energy 2014, available online), the power generation and efficiency achieved Both are at the leading international level (the world’s first double-acting solar power system based on physics and chemistry technology was successfully generated in April 2014 in Chuxiong, Yunnan).

The 10kW-class new traveling-wave thermoacoustic engine system successfully developed this time was based on the principle prototype researched and developed by the team's “acoustic resonance thermoacoustic power generation system” (Chinese invention patent CN201410028815.0) proposed in 2013. The traditional traveling wave thermoacoustic power generation system is greatly reduced in size, with higher power density and thermal power conversion efficiency. The outstanding advantages of the new acoustic resonance gas double-acting thermo-acoustic engine/generator system are: (1) Potential thermal power conversion efficiency and high power density. A number of efficient traveling wave thermoacoustic engine units work together. (2) Ultra-low vibration and silence characteristics. The new thermoacoustic engine has no mechanical moving parts, and the linear motor adopts an adjustable phase ultra-low vibration opposed linear generator. (3) Small system size and high compactness. Efficient traveling wave transmission is adopted, and the traveling wave acoustic duct and resonance tube are small in size.

The power range of the new thermoacoustic engine is suitable for a 10kW to MW class system. It can use various energy sources such as solar energy, biomass energy, and industrial waste heat to generate heat, and has a wide range of application prospects.
