In the desert area of ​​New Mexico in the southwestern United States for nearly 40 years, this house has grown from the original one to three communities. And far across the ocean, built around the world, including China.

American architect Michael Reynolds named his creation Earthship.

The 2008 documentary "Garbage Warrior" is a legendary story about Mike Lenouz and his boat of the earth:

Mike Lenouz, a licensed architect in the United States, is the founder of Earthship Earth, now residing in New Mexico, USA. He is often invited to travel around the world to assist and guide locals in the construction of the Earth Boat.

New house is a new way of life

After obtaining an architectural position from the University of Cincinnati, Mike suddenly realized that what he learned was worthless. The architecture at that time did not make any sense. The earth's ecological environment was not considered at all, and the needs of people were considered very little. Architects could have led humanity in the right direction, but they have been doing the opposite: "The oil is on the verge of exhaustion, the water supply is becoming scarcer, the global warming, the population is exploding... We have not had much time. I was thinking about improving. The living environment, now it is beginning to think about the survival of human beings."

Mike entered the US alone in New Mexico and began building his first work, the Thumb House, in the desert. He bundled the cans with wires into cubes, and then used the "bricks" to build the entire house.

After putting the idea of ​​using waste as building materials into practice, Mike invested in the design of the "land of the earth" with more stubbornness and strong enthusiasm.

In 1977, the first "boat of the earth" was born. The bungalow built with cans and tires is actually the wedding home of Mike and his wife.

The house is unique in structure, with no partitions in the house, no doors, and curtains between each unit. A series of rooms form a U shape, and the side of the top opening is a greenhouse with a full glass wall filled with various flowers and trees. There are solar panels and rainwater collection tanks on the roof. The house also has a skylight to regulate the hot and cold air. The interior of the house is like any American house, with well-equipped kitchen and bathroom, elegant decorations and warm wood furniture. Every morning, Mike always makes a few pull-ups on the door beam, and then picks up some fruits and vegetables for breakfast. The real trouble came when everything was getting on the track. First, the US ministry sent a lawyer to file a lawsuit against Mike because his method of building a house was illegal in New Mexico. “Unifying standards and planning for housing means the safety of the house. A year later, his national architect license was also revoked. At the same time, the Earth Boat Community was also sued by the State Planning Department for five violations. Mike has invested in more than a decade of hard work and has all touched the wall in front of the law. In the next few years, he was entangled in a lawsuit, and while he was daring, holding a new bill he drafted, and dealing with the various people in the judicial administration system, trying to obtain a legal status for his experimental base. .

Disaster is the name of the "land of the earth"

In 2005, the Indonesian tsunami broke out when he was struggling with the bill. He received a call from the Nicobar Islands and was a group of local architects. “After the earthquake in the past month, the most lacking houses, public health systems and clean water, they hope we can help.”

Recalling seven colleagues, Mike and his team arrived in the Bay of Bengal, India. There are only 7,000 residents in the local area of ​​35,000 people. A small family is crowded in a simple shack, without a kitchen or toilet. In the place where everything was destroyed, the obstacles were gone, and Mike and his ideas were fully supported and supported. The locals are passionately involved in the work of rebuilding their homes. They affectionately call Mike "Baba" and are eager to learn the techniques of building this house. Local children are scrambling to find waste, because an empty plastic bottle can be exchanged for a rupee from Mike.

They built a series of land-based boats at a low cost with all the materials they could find in the local area: the walls made of tires and bottles were very thick enough to withstand the magnitude 9 earthquake; the curved structure was able to disperse the tsunami to the greatest extent. In October 2006, the American Institute of Architects learned about Mike’s deeds in the Andaman Islands and invited him to return to apply for an architect’s license. However, he has less time to stay in this hard-won test field because he has to speak around the world to guide local people to build their own land.
