Garbage Warrior's "The Boat of the Earth"

There is a house that can solve all aspects of your life: there is no external water, electricity, gas, no sewers, no external energy. Only use rainwater, can be used for human consumption, irrigate vegetables; feces can be disposed of by themselves; indoors are 21 degrees Celsius all year round; the house can grow grain and fruit, and can raise chickens and raise sheep and fish. A family of four can fully support themselves here. Don't even have to shop.

And this perfect house is made of garbage.

大地之舟

In the desert area of New Mexico in the southwestern United States for nearly 40 years, this house has grown from the original one to three communities. And far across the ocean, built around the world, including China.

American architect Michael Reynolds named his creation Earthship.

Documentary "Garbage Warrior"

The 2008 documentary "Garbage Warrior" is a legendary story about Mike Lenouz and his boat of the earth:

Mike Lenouz, a licensed architect in the United States, is the founder of Earthship Earth, now residing in New Mexico, USA. He is often invited to travel around the world to assist and guide locals in the construction of the Earth Boat.

The American man, who is nearly seventy years old, his best known image is: under the scorching sun, an Einstein-style unkempt white hair flutters in the wind, wearing sunglasses, waving a big hammer, and taking down the dirt. Break into the used tires. Some people in the world say that he is "an unreasonable madman", while the other part respects him as a "garbage warrior." Mike Lenouz, a licensed architect, barely built a "normal" house. The shape of his works is strange, and they all follow the same concept: no need for any external hydropower sewage system, can generate electricity, adjust temperature, produce food, collect recycled water; basic building materials are all garbage, waste tires, cans, beverage bottles, etc. . He gave them a name: Earthship Earthship.

New house is a new way of life

After obtaining an architectural position from the University of Cincinnati, Mike suddenly realized that what he learned was worthless. The architecture at that time did not make any sense. The earth's ecological environment was not considered at all, and the needs of people were considered very little. Architects could have led humanity in the right direction, but they have been doing the opposite: "The oil is on the verge of exhaustion, the water supply is becoming scarcer, the global warming, the population is exploding... We have not had much time. I was thinking about improving. The living environment, now it is beginning to think about the survival of human beings."

Mike entered the US alone in New Mexico and began building his first work, the Thumb House, in the desert. He bundled the cans with wires into cubes, and then used the "bricks" to build the entire house.

After putting the idea of using waste as building materials into practice, Mike invested in the design of the "land of the earth" with more stubbornness and strong enthusiasm.

第一座大地之舟

In 1977, the first "boat of the earth" was born. The bungalow built with cans and tires is actually the wedding home of Mike and his wife.

The house is unique in structure, with no partitions in the house, no doors, and curtains between each unit. A series of rooms form a U shape, and the side of the top opening is a greenhouse with a full glass wall filled with various flowers and trees. There are solar panels and rainwater collection tanks on the roof. The house also has a skylight to regulate the hot and cold air. The interior of the house is like any American house, with well-equipped kitchen and bathroom, elegant decorations and warm wood furniture. Every morning, Mike always makes a few pull-ups on the door beam, and then picks up some fruits and vegetables for breakfast. Sometimes, his son will catch a few fish in the large pool in the living room, and then pick some herbs to make a dish. A picture of a better life.

The real trouble came when everything was getting on the track. First, the US ministry sent a lawyer to file a lawsuit against Mike because his method of building a house was illegal in New Mexico. “Unifying standards and planning for housing means the safety of the house. If you can't do it, then you are not qualified to be an architect.” In order to avoid being charged with “indiscriminate housing in the late 1990s,” Mike was forced to Handed over his state architect license. A year later, his national architect license was also revoked. At the same time, the Earth Boat Community was also sued by the State Planning Department for five violations. In November 1997, executives wearing firearms came to force the entire community to be sealed and prohibited from continuing construction.

Mike has invested in more than a decade of hard work and has all touched the wall in front of the law. In the next few years, he was entangled in a lawsuit, and while he was daring, holding a new bill he drafted, and dealing with the various people in the judicial administration system, trying to obtain a legal status for his experimental base. .

Disaster is the name of the "land of the earth"

In 2005, the Indonesian tsunami broke out when he was struggling with the bill. He received a call from the Nicobar Islands and was a group of local architects. “After the earthquake in the past month, the most lacking houses, public health systems and clean water, they hope we can help.”

Recalling seven colleagues, Mike and his team arrived in the Bay of Bengal, India. There are only 7,000 residents in the local area of 35,000 people. A small family is crowded in a simple shack, without a kitchen or toilet. In the place where everything was destroyed, the obstacles were gone, and Mike and his ideas were fully supported and supported. The locals are passionately involved in the work of rebuilding their homes. They affectionately call Mike "Baba" and are eager to learn the techniques of building this house. Local children are scrambling to find waste, because an empty plastic bottle can be exchanged for a rupee from Mike.

They built a series of land-based boats at a low cost with all the materials they could find in the local area: the walls made of tires and bottles were very thick enough to withstand the magnitude 9 earthquake; the curved structure was able to disperse the tsunami to the greatest extent. The impact. In the face of the revitalized residents, Mike felt a lot: "It seems that the disaster has to happen, people think of prevention. But it may be too late. We have already seen the power of nature, it must completely eliminate human beings, is It's easy."

用轮胎和瓶子筑成的墙非常厚实,足以抵抗九级地震。

The walls made of tires and bottles are very thick enough to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake.

In October 2006, the American Institute of Architects learned about Mike’s deeds in the Andaman Islands and invited him to return to apply for an architect’s license. In March of the following year, Mike’s bill was finally approved by the state government. His “Battle of the Earth” experimental base could finally be legally restarted. However, he has less time to stay in this hard-won test field because he has to speak around the world to guide local people to build their own land. The Netherlands, France, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Honduras, India, Japan, and even China... There have been new landboats everywhere.

Deconstructing the boat of the earth

Although each "land of the earth" has a different shape, it has the following features in common.

Use natural energy

The whole house is a closed system. The south is connected to a greenhouse. The huge glass wall of the greenhouse allows the sun to shine directly into the room in the winter, bringing warmth; the summer sun will not shine into the house.

Solar panels or wind power equipment on the roof to provide electricity for use in the house;

Automatic adjustment at room temperature

When the winter sun fills the room, the heat is absorbed by the thick tire wall, effectively stored in it, and it is used for heat preservation, and basically no additional heating equipment is needed. The summer sun will not shine into the house, the iron plate on the roof of the greenhouse heats the air, the air pipe buried in the ground connects to the outside, the hot air rises, and the air exits from the opening of the roof, driving the cooled air in the pipe into the room to keep the house cool. No air conditioning equipment is required.

Collecting rainwater utilization

The shape of the roof collects rainwater. After filtering, it can be used for drinking and washing (the natural harmless cleaning agent is used for washing); the washing water flows through the filtering system in the greenhouse and then flows to the greenhouse to irrigate the plants, or flows to the toilet for flushing the toilet; the water that passes through the toilet passes through Underground pipes flow into outdoor septic tanks, sewage from septic tanks, and plants planted outside by underground irrigation.

Food self-sufficiency

The south greenhouse and the open space outside the house can grow fruits, vegetables and food crops, and can raise chickens, raise sheep and raise fish to meet the needs of food.

加拿大的地球之舟

“I have always felt that it is up to the residence to maintain our lives, not the other way around, to sacrifice money and life to maintain a place to live. The reason why I actively promote the boat of the earth is to show that life is not only self-sufficient. The rich can enjoy it, and the poor can also achieve it. With this way of life, we have no reason to continue to destroy the earth." - Mike Lenouz

Medium Duty Industrial Casters

The casters were widely used all around the world, but the history of it is very difficult to track. After people invented the wheel, handling and moving something is became a lot easier, but wheels can only run in a straight line, not easy to change direction when moving. Then people invented the swivel wheel to solve this problem, which we called casters nowadays. Casters bring a Landmark revolution, not only easy to carry, but also can move to any direction, greatly improving the working efficiency.
