In 2014, Hubei Province launched an initiative called the "Jingchu Line for the Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products," which recently brought a team to Qianjiang City to inspect the safety of local crayfish, watermelons, and other agricultural products. Over the next three days, the team planned to conduct inspections in Jingmen and Fuyang as part of their ongoing efforts to ensure food safety across the region.
Back in 2004, Qianjiang's crayfish industry faced a major crisis. Workers at processing plants often spent long hours submerged in water, rubbing shrimp shells, which led to frequent infections. To combat this, they used anti-inflammatory drugs, but this practice eventually led to excessive contamination. As a result, Qianjiang’s crayfish exports were halted for eight months, with no exports taking place during that period. This was a significant setback for the local industry.
Today, the situation has drastically improved. Each worker is now required to wear two pairs of rubber gloves daily, and they must be worn throughout the entire workday. If gloves are not sufficient, workers can bring their own. This strict policy has effectively eliminated contamination issues, ensuring that the crayfish produced in Qianjiang meet high-quality standards.
During a recent interview, a reporter discovered a watermelon labeled with a QR code. Scanning it with a smartphone revealed the "Agricultural Farm Products Quality Traceability Project" interface from the Ministry of Agriculture. The information included details about the watermelon—such as what type of fertilizer was used, when it was harvested, and even the ministry’s contact number. This level of transparency helps consumers make informed choices and builds trust in local agriculture.
The reporter also learned that there are currently 23 agricultural product quality traceability units and 17 additional ones under development within the province. Since 2009, the traceable area for crop production has reached 260,000 mu (approximately 43,000 acres), with a total of 200,000 tons of produce being tracked. For livestock and poultry products, the traceable scale has reached 10.42 million heads, with 9,000 tons of output being traced. The system covers major agricultural products such as grains, pork, and oils, significantly enhancing food safety and consumer confidence.
This progress highlights the commitment of local authorities and businesses to improving agricultural practices and ensuring the quality of food products. It also reflects a growing trend toward transparency and accountability in the food supply chain.
